AccuWeather forecast calls for ‘above average’ 2020 hurricane season

As if things weren’t hectic enough.

On Thursday, March 27, AccuWeather released its forecast for the upcoming hurricane season and predicts it is going to be an “above average” season.

The hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30.

AccuWeather in its release is predicting 14 to 18 named storms during the 2020 Atlantic Ocean hurricane season. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, an average hurricane season produces 12 named storms.

Of the 14-18 predicted storms, AccuWeather is forecasting seven to nine becoming hurricanes, and two to four strengthening to major hurricanes (category 3 or stronger).

In 2019, there were 18 named storms, which included six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The 2019 hurricane season was the fourth most active on record.

Please remember, regardless of what is going on today, hurricane season is a real part of life in SWFL. Have a plan, be prepared, and make sure your home is protected.
